ChatGPT and Generative AI Haven’t Disrupted U.S. Jobs Yet

Concerns that generative AI, led by tools like ChatGPT, would trigger mass layoffs in the U.S. workforce have not yet materialized, according to new research from Yale University’s Budget Lab. The study, released Wednesday, examined labor distribution trends 33 months after ChatGPT’s launch and found no discernible disruption in job patterns.

Researchers concluded that while generative AI adoption is increasing, there is little evidence so far that it is pushing workers out of roles, creating widespread automation-driven layoffs, or generating significant new job categories. However, they cautioned that this is an early-stage snapshot and pledged to monitor workforce impacts monthly to track future changes.

This finding contrasts with warnings from industry leaders such as Anthropic’s CEO, who suggested AI could cause a dramatic spike in unemployment, and Salesforce’s Marc Benioff, who predicted the current generation of executives may be the last to manage all-human workforces.

While the broader market has not shifted, some individual companies have cited AI as a factor in downsizing. Dropbox and Duolingo, for example, pointed to AI adoption when making recent layoffs. Surveys earlier this year also indicated that many employers globally were considering workforce reductions tied to automation.

The study comes as doubts grow about AI’s profitability. A Massachusetts Institute of Technology report found 95% of firms experimenting with AI have yet to see financial returns, while a Harvard Business Review analysis described “workslop,” where AI-generated, low-effort content actually creates more work for employees who must review or correct it.

Key takeaways for tech leaders include:

  • Labor market stability persists despite AI hype.
  • Some companies are restructuring based on AI adoption.
  • Most businesses still fail to monetize AI effectively.
  • Ongoing monitoring is essential as adoption deepens.

For now, AI is influencing conversations about work more than the actual distribution of jobs.
