The concept of trust by design in AI agents is becoming central as autonomous systems move from passive tools to active decision-makers. As AI agents begin to initiate tasks, make decisions, and adapt without constant human input, organisations face a fundamental question: who is accountable when outcomes cannot fully explain?
This challenge is no longer theoretical. Enterprises deploying agentic AI in areas such as financial services or healthcare must manage systems that interact with sensitive data and influence real-world outcomes. According to Wipro’s Global Chief Privacy and AI Governance Officer, Ivana Bartoletti, trust must be embedded into these systems from the start, not added after deployment.
As governments accelerate AI adoption, urgency is rising, with initiatives in the UK driving rapid scaling and increasing compliance risks. At the same time, research shows AI becomes more persuasive with personal context, creating a shift where trust can turn into dependency. To address this, organisations must adopt “trust by design” with transparent decisions, clear boundaries, and built-in auditability and human oversight.
Equally important is the psychological dimension. AI systems must avoid misleading users through overly human-like behaviour or emotional cues. Instead, they should communicate uncertainty, avoid reinforcing bias, and support critical thinking. Trust is not built through persuasion, but through predictability and clarity.
Ultimately, trust by design is not just about preventing harm. It is about shaping how AI systems behave over time. As organisations scale agentic AI, the real challenge is not only ensuring compliance, but defining the behaviours these systems encourage and the long-term impact they create.
