AI Agents’ Success Hinges on Data Readiness, Not Just Algorithms

AI agents are emerging as one of the fastest-growing innovations in artificial intelligence, with adoption spanning marketing, customer service, finance, healthcare, and beyond. Google and Microsoft recently unveiled plans to embed AI agents into search experiences, while Gartner predicts that within five years, 80% of common customer service queries will be resolved by AI agents. Boston Consulting Group forecasts a 45% CAGR for the AI agent market over the next half-decade. 

Yet, despite their potential, 78% of global companies remain unprepared to deploy AI agents or large language models (LLMs), according to MIT Technology Review Insights, largely due to unready or poor-quality data. Without unified, accurate, and real-time customer data, even the most advanced AI agents risk delivering faulty or misleading outputs — as seen when Air Canada’s chatbot wrongly promised a discount, or when a customer service AI mishandled accounts, triggering mass subscription cancellations. 

A critical, often overlooked factor is identity resolution — accurately linking customer records across fragmented systems. Traditional rule-based methods are brittle, but AI-native identity resolution can now operate dynamically, matching records in real time. This refines customer profiles continuously, and improves precision with each interaction. 

For AI agents to function effectively, organizations must ensure their data is: 

  • Unified: Integrating inputs from CRM, eCommerce, and support systems into a single accessible layer. 
  • Accurate: Eliminating duplicates and inconsistencies for a trusted customer view. 
  • Contextual: Tailoring profiles for specific departmental needs. 
  • Governed: Enforcing access controls, oversight, and compliance with privacy regulations. 

In the age of AI agents, data is no longer back-end infrastructure — it’s a strategic differentiator. Companies that invest in robust, agent-ready data foundations will deliver more accurate, personalized, and scalable AI-driven experiences, transforming AI from a flashy tool into a trusted, high-impact business solution.
